The 2024 Super Fourteen Chess Championship started today, Sunday 11th February at Nob View Hotel Ntinda with the 28 players fighting to grab land titles for winners of the event.
This championship is for the players who collected best points among the five events held in the year since early 2023.
According to the Uganda Chess Federation president, Emmanuel Mwaka, the winners of the championship each will walk away with a land title and this will be the first of it’s kind in Uganda.
“….we’re witnessing the grand final named the super 14 which is the Uganda National Chess Championship, we have a grand prize of a land title for the winner in the open category.” Says Emmanuel Mwaka, Uganda Chess Federation president.
Mwaka revealed to this website how they reached to the super 14 who are featuring in this championship which will run for 13 rounds, and today was the first round and it will be climaxing at the end of February.
“We got the super 14 from the five grand prix events we held throughout the year.” Mwaka stated.
“The event were; the Kantinti Memorial tournament which was held in the first quarter of 2023, we followed with Rwabushenyi tournament, Kireka open, national chess championship and Zabasajja Memorial Chess Championship.” He highlighted.
“So from these five grand prix events, we selected 12 players based on their results and then we added the junior champions, both girl and a boy, then we added a world card in both sexes to make 14 players from men and 14 from ladies.”
Mwaka asserts that the championship will also act as the selection process to get the national team that will feature in the Olympiad championship to be held in Budapest Hungary in September.
“From this event, we shall select five players from each sex who will represent the country in the Olympiad championship which will be held in September this year in Budapest Hungary.” He Said.
The championship will be played in every weekend, playing two rounds every day and 13 rounds will be played to call it a tournament.
