AWCON 2022 Draws: Uganda Lands in Host’s Territory
The draws for Total Energies Africa Women’s Nations Cup 2022 edition held on Friday and the Crested Cranes drawn against the Hosts, Morocco.
Tonight Uganda learned the opponent and the group they belong after the much awaited draws were held today.
Uganda, the side that smoothly qualified to AWCON finals after 20 years of no show, following the neighbors, Kenya pulled out of the race at the final rap of the qualifiers, landed in group A against the hosts Morocco, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
For starters, this is the first edition, CAF is organizing this tournament with 12 teams moving from those usual eight.
The twelve teams were drawn in three groups of four and in other groups, the defending Champions, the Falcons of Nigeria were pitted in group C with Banyana Banyana of South Africa, CECAFA region side, Burundi and Botswana.
Group B has Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia and Togo.
The tournament starts on 2nd July 2022.
The same tournament going to act as the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers and the semifinalists will qualify automatic.
Before heading to AWCON, Uganda will first hold CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship scheduled between end of May and early June and will act as preps for George Lutalo coached side.
This will be the second time Uganda is featuring in AWCON, the first came in 2000.
