Nkumba University reignited their qualification hopes in the Pepsi University Football League after edging ISBAT University 1-0 in a hard-fought Group C encounter played on Friday at Nkumba University playground.

The 2023/24 champions made their intentions clear early in the match, taking the lead in the 13th minute through Kavuma Abbey’s calmly taken penalty. Referee Mulisha Ismail pointed to the spot after Nkumba’s forward was fouled inside the area, and Kavuma made no mistake—sending ISBAT goalkeeper Eric Lubandi the wrong way to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

ISBAT attempted to fight back, creating a few clear chances before the break, but their misfiring forwards failed to convert, leaving Nkumba with a slender lead at halftime.

The second half was a balanced affair, with both sides showing intensity and creating opportunities. However, neither managed to find the back of the net, as strong defensive displays and poor finishing kept the score unchanged.

Despite recently appointing coach Ssekiziyivu Juma to replace the sacked Edwin Laston Haumba, ISBAT’s struggles continued as they slumped to their second straight defeat of the season. They now sit at the bottom of Group C without a point.

Meanwhile, Nkumba’s victory breathes new life into their campaign following an opening-day 1-0 loss to YMCA Comprehensive. The result lifts them closer to contention for the knockout stages.

Kyambogo University remains on top of the group standings with six points from two matches—the only team in the league yet to drop a point.

Action in the Pepsi University Football League continues on Saturday in Bombo, where Ndejje University will host Kumi University in another exciting fixture.
