Africa Schools Competitions: Buddo SS Off to Morocco to Represent Uganda in Basketball
Buddu Secondary School, the reigning champions of the 2022 FEASSSA games, basketball 3×3 boys and finalists in girls set off to Morocco to represent Uganda in the Africa Schools Championship.
The team that is representing Uganda in 2023 championship and will be held in City of Casablanca in Morocco was flagged off on Thursday, 23rd February 2023 by Sports state Minister, Hon. Peter Ogwang at Lugogo Sports Complex.
Buddo S.S boys’ 3×3 Basketball team has Gideon Aaron Kuteesa (S2), Ethan Shiima (S2), Elly Mutabingwa (S3) and Herbert Junior Lumansi (S4). The players on the girls’ team include; Elizabeth Nakabugo (S1), Angella Auma (S3), Christine Namyalo (S4) and Happy Daisy Atukunda (S4).
Uganda’s Buddo Secondary School will represent the country at the 2023 Africa 3×3 schools’ basketball championship in Casablanca city, Morocco. The tournament will run between 26th February and 3rd March 2023.
State minister of sports Hon. Peter Ogwang officially flagged off the team of eight players and six officials at the Copper Chimney Restaurant, Kampala on Thursday, February 23, 2023.
Minister Hon. Ogwang was flanked by the chairperson of the National Council of Sports (NCS) Ambrose Tashobya, Commissioner of Physical education and sports Rev. Canon Duncans Mugumya, Justus Mugisha (president of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association), among others.
Minister has urged the players to remain disciplined and work hard at all times if they are to realize the true potentiality of their sweat.
“Sports as of today is one of the highest paying jobs in the world. You are privileged to be picked as among the representatives to carry your country’s flag at such a young age. Remain disciplined and work hard at all times.” Minister told the athletes while flagging them off at Lugogo.
In the same speech, Minister lauded Royal Giant High School and Amus College School for the representation at the recently concluded U-15 CAF football competition (CECAFA zone).
He also called upon different stakeholders to join in the development process of sports in Uganda.
The team’s assistant Coach and the in charge of the girls basketball at Buddo SS, madam Marion Atwegyeise asserted that they are going to Casablanca to collect gold medals because they are set to compete.
“We have started preparing for these games since December, and we are ready to bring two trophies because we’re taking two teams.” She said.
Rev. Duncan Mugumya is the leader of delegation and the team set off to Morocco on Friday morning (wee hours) and boarded Turkish airlines.
Justus Mugisha, president of USSSA lauded the Government of Uganda through the National Council of Sports for the sponsorship for part of the team to Morocco.
He confirmed that the Royal Kingdom of Morocco will carter for all the in-land transport, feeding and accommodation costs for the entire duration of the tournament.
Rev Mugumya will head the entire delegation deputized by Fred Kwizera.
The head coach is John Jevish Omondi and will be helped by Marion Atwegyeise.
Brian Ssebalamu travels to officiate as an umpire and the USSSA publicist Aisha Nakato is the team media officer.
